CSK wins IPL opener, Kohli breaks record

Virat Kohli became the first Indian to cross 12K runs

Newly appointed captain Ruturaj Gaikwad led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) won against Faf du Plessis led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the opening match of the IPL 2024 on Mar. 22.

Clinching a 6-wicket win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, the match also witnessed the first ever Indian to cross the 12K runs in T20 match format. Virat Kohli scored 21 runs off 20 balls in the opening match, crossing the 12K mark.

The match unfolded with RCB opting to bat first after winning the toss. They bagged a total of 173 runs with 6 wickets in 20 overs. Anuj Rawat scored 48 runs, while Dinesh Kartik bagged 38, delivering a 95-run partnership. However, their quick loss of 5 wickets, four taken by Mustafizur Rahman and onw bu Deepak Chahar, gave them a shaky ground. Glenn Maxwell and Rajat Patidar were dismissed quickly at 0 runs.

Rahman and Chahar’s efforts in the first inning were propelled by the batsmen in the second innings. In response to RCB, CSK chased the target with contributions from Rachin Ravindra, Ajinkya Rahane and Daryl Mitchell. Ravindra, Rahane and Mitchell scored 37, 27 and 22 runs respectively. Ravindra Jadeja and Shivam Dube maintained a partnership of 50 runs, where Jadeja also crossed 100 sixes in the IPL format.

Rahman’s bowling earned him the ‘Player of the Match’ title for bagging four wickets, while Kohli grabbed the record for becoming the first Indian cricketer to cross the 12K runs mark.

Kohli’s tally stood at 12,015 runs in 377 matches, joining the list of 12K run mark in T20 cricket on the sixth spot.

Among the list were Chris Gayle with 14,562 runs in 463 matches, Shoaib Malik with 13,360 runs in 542 matches, Kieron Pollard with 12,900 runs in 660 matches, Alex Hales 12,319 runs in 449 matches, and David Warner with 12,065 runs in 370 matches. Additionally, Kohli amassed 4,037 runs in T20 Internationals for India.
