Chicago EEOC names Amrith Kaur Aakre as director

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has appointed Amrith Kaur Aakre as director of its Chicago district 

With area offices in Milwaukee and Minneapolis, the EEOC's Chicago District handles discrimination charges, administrative enforcement, and agency litigation in Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, North and South Dakota, and Wisconsin. 

Aakre was most recently the Sikh Coalition's legal director. In this role, she oversaw legislative and policy activities aimed at defending the civil rights of all Americans, fostering community empowerment, and pursuing ongoing community engagement programs. 

“Aakre has a proven track record of creative problem solving, broad management experience, and a deep commitment to civil rights,” said EEOC chair Charlotte A. Burrows. 

Upon her new appointment, Aakre said, “I have incredible respect for the EEOC and its mission to advance equal employment opportunities for all, and I’m grateful to be appointed Chicago District Director. I look forward to working together with the dedicated members of the Chicago District to create impactful change and combat unlawful employment discrimination across our region.”

Expressing excitement to learn from the various stakeholder groups, civil rights, and other professional organizations, about how Chicago District offices can best serve their needs, she added, “I greatly appreciate the opportunity to continue engaging with civil rights work and am honored to lead the Chicago District moving forward.”

Meanwhile, Aakre also serves as a member of the leadership committee for the Religious Liberty Section of the American Bar Association as well as the board of directors for the South Asian Bar Association (SABA) of Chicago and the ACLU of Illinois. 

She is a recipient of the Public Interest Achievement Award from SABA North America in 2022, the Public Interest Lawyer Award from SABA Chicago in 2023 and 2021, and the Community Service Award from the Asian American Coalition of Chicago in 2017. 

Additionally, Aakre has worked for the Chicago Council on Global Affairs as an Emerging Leaders Fellow. She received her Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of Illinois’ Chicago Law School after earning dual bachelor's degrees from George Washington University in applied science and technology engineering and English literature.
