In a momentous recognition of India's strides in space exploration, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) team behind Chandrayaan-3 bagged the 2024 John L. 'Jack' Swigert Jr. Award for Space Exploration.

The award, presented annually by the Space Foundation at the Space Symposium in Colorado, celebrates extraordinary achievements in space exploration.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission achieved a historic milestone by the successfully landing on the Moon’s uncharted South Pole, expanding humanity’s understanding of lunar exploration. India's Consul General in Houston, D C Manjunath, accepted the award on behalf of ISRO during the opening ceremony of the Space Symposium.

“India’s leadership in space is an inspiration to the world,” Space Foundation CEO Heather Pringle said in a statement in January when the award was announced. “The pioneering work of the entire Chandrayaan-3 team has again raised the bar for space exploration, and their remarkable lunar landing is a model to us all. Congratulations and we can’t wait to see what you do next!” he said.

Named after astronaut John L. ‘Jack’ Swigert Jr., who played a vital role in the Apollo 13 mission, the award recognizes the remarkable efforts of companies, space agencies, or consortiums in advancing space exploration and discovery.

Swigert, alongside fellow astronauts James A. Lovell Jr. and Fred Haise, famously navigated the harrowing challenges of the Apollo 13 mission, demonstrating humanity's resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
