Indian-origin Canadian politician Chandra Arya, expressed deep concern over the rising number of assaults on journalists reporting on the rise of Khalistani extremism in the country.

Arya’s reaction  comes after Rishi Nagar, news director of Red FM Calgary, was attacked on Sep.29 after leaving an election-related event. The assault occurred following a report on an incident at the Gurdwara Dashmesh Cultural Centre in Calgary, which led to the arrest of two Indo-Canadians on firearms-related charges.

Addressing the issue in Parliament, Arya, a member of the Liberal Party, highlighted a series of violent incidents targeting journalists, primarily of Indian origin.

"I am very concerned by attacks on journalists who report on Khalistani extremism in Canada," Arya said noting that  Nagar's assault, was one of several such incidents. Please add a better quote from his speech.

Arya also cited previous assaults, including the March 2023 attack on Sameer Kaushal of Radio AM600 in Richmond, BC, for his coverage of a Khalistan protest. In February 2022, Brampton radio host Deepak Punj was attacked in his studio for criticizing violence linked to Khalistani activities.

Arya further mentioned the case of anti-terrorism investigative journalist Mocha Bezirgan, who has faced death threats for his "fearless reporting on Khalistani extremism."

The MP urged Canadian law enforcement to take the issue seriously, emphasizing the need for decisive action. "There are many more attacks in the Greater Toronto Area and across Canada by Khalistani extremists. I call on law enforcement agencies to take notice of Khalistani extremism with all the seriousness it deserves," he stated. "It has to be dealt with an iron hand before it is too late."
