California Governor appoints Poonum Patel as deputy director of business development

Her appointment aims to boost business attraction, retention, economic growth, and job creation.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has announced the appointment of Indian-American Poonum Patel as the new deputy director of business development at the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development. 

Patel, a resident of Hayward, brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served in the office since 2013. She has held various positions including senior business development specialist, senior permit assistant, permit assistant specialist, and senior project specialist. Most recently, Patel has served as assistant deputy director of Business Investment Services since 2020. 

Patel’s tenure in public service also includes working as special assistant to appointments in the Office of Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. from 2011 to 2013. Governor Newsom’s office highlighted Patel’s extensive experience and dedication to public service as key factors in her appointment.

Governor Newsom expressed confidence in Patel’s ability to foster business development and support economic initiatives across California. Her appointment is expected to enhance the state’s efforts in attracting and retaining businesses, ultimately contributing to economic growth and job creation.

Patel's educational background includes a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, both from the University of California, Davis. 

The role of deputy director of business development is critical in driving the state’s business and economic strategies, promoting investment, and facilitating growth. The position does not require Senate confirmation. The annual compensation for the role is set at $133,608.
