The California High-Speed Rail Authority’s Board of Directors appointed Ian Choudri as the next chief executive officer (CEO) earlier this month. Choudri will replace retiring Brian Kelly who has led the Authority for the last six years.

Choudri has been involved in the transportation industry for more than 30 years, and his experience includes high-speed rail projects in France and Spain. He was most recently the senior vice president for HNTB corporation, where he collaborated with partners at the federal and state levels on infrastructure and transportation-related matters.

In California, he worked to develop future connections between the Ontario Airport with the future Brightline West terminus in Rancho Cucamonga. His appointment as CEO comes as the Authority moves closer to passenger operations on the nation’s first 220-mph electrified rail system.

Commenting on the significance of his new role, Choudri said, "This is a once in a lifetime project that has the attention of the nation. I look forward to joining the ranks of the dedicated employees at the Authority, rolling up my sleeves and working collectively to make our mark on high-speed rail in California. Let’s keep building and get this done.”

California Gov. Gavin Newsom welcomed Choudri's appointment, acknowledging his deep experience and get-it-done attitude. "He is taking control at an important moment for this project. Over the next few years, the dream of high-speed rail in California will become a reality, as we begin to lay track, design and build stations, and buy trains. Ian is the perfect steward for the next phase of high-speed rail."

“Our efforts are bigger than one project – this is about transforming ground transportation for the world’s 5th largest economy, while showing the nation what is possible with enough vision and will and bringing a cleaner transportation future to California. This is critical to California’s future as we link whole regions – universities and businesses, tourists and commuters – with fast. efficient service from the Bay Area through the Central Valley and into Southern California," the governor added.
