A British Indian teenager from Watford is on the verge of making history as she prepares to swim solo across the English Channel. Prisha Tapre, who recently turned 16, is set to tackle the grueling 21-mile swim from Dover to Cap Gris Nez, aiming to become one of the youngest individuals to complete this challenging feat.
Prisha, a member of the Watford Swimming Club, would be the first teenage solo swimmer from the club to conquer the Channel. She aims to break barriers and inspire other young girls, particularly those from diverse ethnic backgrounds, to take up sports.
"Many say it is harder than climbing Mount Everest. That really motivates me and pushes me to do more," Prisha shared, expressing her passion for the challenge. "I wish to set a precedent so that more girls like me take to sports, especially within our community where it’s rare to find girls pursuing swimming as a sport," she told the Watford Observer.
Her coach, Jeremy Irvine, who has supported her throughout her journey, spoke highly of her dedication. "Prisha has shown incredible commitment since joining our group at just 12 years old. She has completed numerous long-distance swims and rigorous training sessions, and I have every confidence in her ability to succeed," Irvine said.
Prisha is also using her swim to raise funds for the charity Akshaya Patra, which provides meals to children in need. "The work done by Akshaya Patra really inspires me. They feed children my age and even younger," she added.
