Former Indian Ambassador to the United States and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Amritsar, Taranjit Singh Sandhu Samundri, on Friday, May.10, submitted his nomination papers to contest the elections from the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat.
India’s Minister of External Affairs (MEA) Dr. S Jaishankar, was present at the office of Amritsar deputy commissioner cum district returning officer Ghanshyam Thori, where Sandhu submitted the papers.
Speaking on the occasion, Jaishankar said that while the decision to field Sandhu was made by the party, it was his personal choice to come to Amritsar to support the candidate.
“We are confident that the people of Amritsar will elect our (BJP) candidate Taranjit Singh Sandhu and send him as a sincere member of Parliament (MP). Sandhu will be a very good MP. As an ambassador, he served the nation a lot and will now serve Amritsar and Punjab exceptionally well,” Jaishankar told reporters.

The minister emphasized that with the arrival of Sandhu as an MP in Delhi, the representation of Amritsar will become a cause of recognition in the world. “Sandhu will put forward Punjab’s side and Amritsar’s interest in Parliament,” he said.

Pointing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Jaishankar emphasized that people in Delhi value Sandhu a lot. He said that there is no competition for Sandhu’s ability and talent.
As a Member of Parliament, Sandhu said that he will priortize development, industry and trade in Amritsar. He said that a special package will be brought from the Modi government for the development of Amritsar, which will address every aspect from farmers income to infrastructure of the city.
A tribute to family legacy
It may be pointed out that Sandhu in his nomination papers added the name of his grandfather Teja Singh Samundri to his name.
A known and repsected name in the Sikh community, Teja Singh Samundri was one of the founding members of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, India’s apex Sikh organization. Its headquarters situated along the complex of Sri Harmandar Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar, is also named after him.
Regarding the name change, Sandhu said that he is ready to serve the city of Amritsar while taking forward the service done by his elders and preserving their legacy.
