US President Joe Biden has re-nominated Indian-American Surgeon General Dr Vivek Murthy to represent the country on the executive board of the World Health Organization (WHO).

The 46-year-old physician's nomination was resubmitted as his confirmation to the position had been pending in the Senate since October 2022.
The US Senate appointed Murthy for the role of the 21st Surgeon General of the United States in March 2021. Prior to this, he served as the 19th Surgeon General under former President Barack Obama.

In his capacity as the nation's top doctor, the Surgeon General holds the mission of establishing the groundwork for a healthier country. This involves leveraging the best available scientific information to offer clear, consistent, and equitable guidance and resources for the public. The role is pivotal in promoting public health and ensuring that the population receives accurate and accessible information to make informed decisions about their well-being.
A recent news release by the White House named Murthy among the nominations submitted to the Senate.

As the Vice Admiral of the US Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, Murthy commands a uniformed service, comprising over 6,000 committed public health officers. This corps is dedicated to serving the most underserved and vulnerable populations, reflecting a crucial aspect of his leadership role in public health.

Murthy is also the first Surgeon General of Indian descent. Raised in Miami, he is an alumnus of Harvard University, the Yale School of Medicine, and the Yale School of Management. He is not only a distinguished physician but also a research scientist, entrepreneur, and author. He currently resides in Washington, DC, with his wife, Dr. Alice Chen, and their two children.

Murthy was born in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, to immigrants from Karnataka, India. In 1978, the family moved to Newfoundland, New Jersey, where his father served as a district medical officer.
