Indian-American expert in public health statistics and data science, Bhramar Mukherjee, has been appointed the Anna M.R. Lauder Professor of Biostatistics at the Yale School of Public Health (YSPH), the university announced.
The 10-year appointment, renewable by the YSPH dean, marks a significant milestone in Mukherjee’s career, as she takes on a key role in shaping efforts to develop strategic initiatives in public health data science and equity, aiming to advance research and education at the Ivy League institution. She will also foster global partnerships to enhance the field internationally.
Mukherjee recently joined the YSPH faculty as the inaugural senior associate dean of public health data science and data equity. She succeeds Paul Cleary, former dean of YSPH, in holding the Lauder chair.
A pioneer in biostatistics, Mukherjee’s research spans genetic, environmental, and healthcare data integration, with a focus on chronic diseases, environmental epidemiology, and reproductive health. She has also made significant contributions to cancer and cardiovascular research, as well as COVID-19 data analysis.
Mukherjee holds additional positions at Yale, including a secondary appointment in the Department of Statistics and Data Science and affiliations with the MacMillan Center and the Institute for the Foundations of Data Science. She is also a fellow of the American Statistical Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the National Academy of Medicine.
Mukherjee earned her B.Sc. in Statistics from Presidency College, Kolkata in 1994, M.Stat degree from the Indian Statistical Institute in 1996, and a Ph.D. in statistics from Purdue University. She previously served at the University of Michigan, where she held multiple distinguished professorships and leadership positions.
