Beware of False Hopes & Promises

In this letter, Girish Modi cautions against believing in campaign promises made my politicians

Dear Editor,

Presidential candidate Kamala Harris is announcing many promises in her campaign speeches in order to attract voters. However, these promises are false and cannot be delivered, because the laws have to be passed in both houses of Congress, which will be difficult. Remember the axiom: what the president proposes, Congress disposes!

For example, Kamala Harris proposed a 21% to 28% tax on capital gains. Donald Trump has discussed lowering that rate to 15%-20%.

In any case, Harris’s varied tax ideas could face an uphill fight in Congress with many of these plans echoing ones that President Biden has been unsuccessfully pushing for years. Those plans weren’t enacted even in 2021 and 2022, when Biden was in the White House and Democrats controlled both the House and the Senate.

Similarly, building 25,000 new housing will be a drop in the bucket, since we need millions of new housing to accommodate 10 millions of undocumented immigrants. It may not lower cost of ownership of homes, because the middlemen will pocket the money and buyers will still pay higher prices. It will benefit illegal immigrants, since most of them work in construction industries and pay no taxes.

Also, Harris cannot lower grocery and commodity prices, because workers’ wages are already increased due to high inflation which cannot be rolled back.

So beware of all the phony promises the candidates make.

Girish Modi
