Two Bay Area-based organizations, The LGBT Asylum Project and Parivar Bay Area (PBA), have agreed to merge their missions and operate as the Center for Immigration Protection (CIP). The center is focused particularly on uplifting TGNCI+(Transgender, Gender Non-confirming, and Intersex) immigrants.
According to a release, CIP will be the the first organization in San Francisco, which is known as the LGBTQ capital of the world, to provide support to immigrants with TGNCI+ identities. It aims to offer legal and social integration while promoting awareness, education, acceptance, and resources to foster intersectional unity and rebuild lives in America.
“Our mission is to empower and advocate for LGBTQIA+ immigrants, ensuring their safety, well-being, and celebrating social belonging, while uplifting TGNCI+ identities, to belong in the United States of America (USA), and to build a community of light, love, and unity. We strive to provide comprehensive and accessible support services, including legal assistance and social integration, while promoting awareness, education, and acceptance,” their mission statement reads.
Under CIP, the PBA and the LGBT Asylum Project will expand their programs and services, centred around the above mission, and continue to meet the diverse needs of LGBTQIA+ asylum-seekers and immigrants, with TGNCI+ communities from the Global South being the major focus, the release stated.
Anjali Rimi (she/they) has been elected to serve as the president and chair, Board of Directors, of the CIP. Prior to this, she was the president and CEO of ParivarBayArea. “We are proud to come together as the Center for Immigrant Protection. Our commitment to tackling the unique and unaddressed needs of LGBTQIA+ immigrants sets us apart,” said Rimi. "And we are dedicated to ensuring that TGNCI+ immigrants receive the holistic support they deserve so they are able to thrive in San Francisco and beyond,” she added.
