The Arya Samaj of Chicago land hosted the Mega Multikund Maha Yajna in West Chicago recently. The event also commemorated 200 Years of Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati, an Indian philosopher, social leader and founder of the Arya Samaj.
In February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the year-long celebrations commemorating the 200th birth anniversary of Maharishi Dayanand Saraswati, at Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Delhi. The Arya Samajs around the world joined in the festivities.
Maharshi founded the Arya Samaj in 1875 to counter social inequities prevalent during the times. He also played crucial role in the Indian Freedom movement and was an advocate for women’s rights.
The Maha Yajna, with its three havan kunds, was planned by Ajay Gharia, Ash Perti along with Dr. Ashok Mehta and all board members of Arya Samaj of Chicago. It was attended by devotees from all over Chicago. 21 families participated in the rituals.
The havan (ritual offering) was performed Dr. Kamlesh Chokshi, a retired director and professor from Gujarat University, while the ardas (prayer) was performed by Asmita and Sarla. Pratibha Jairath along with Shree Kamath, Shaila Khedkar and Jitendra Bulsara sang the bhajans (hymns).
