Agrani, a New Jersey-based women-led non-profit will celebrate Durga Puja on Oct. 14-15 at Plainfield High School, New Jersey. The event is touted to be the biggest women-led Durga Puja Utsav in the United States.
Durgashtami or Durgotsav is an annual Hindu festival that celebrates Goddess Durga and her triumph over Mahishasura. It is popularly celebrated in the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Tripura, Odisha, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh (eastern parts), and some other countries like Nepal and Bangladesh.
According to the organizers, this year’s celebration is expected to attract around 2,000 attendees over two days. The event will feature cultural performances, religious ceremonies, and a vibrant atmosphere with free lunch provided for all attendees.
Agrani’s aim with the large-scale event is to showcase women's power and what they can achieve when they unite to create a positive impact in society. Last year the organization invited a female priest to perform the rituals of the puja.
Founded in 2022, Agrani New Jersey (‘AGRANI’ – MEANING LEADING AND PIONEER), has dedicated itself to empowering women, uplifting communities, and supporting charitable initiatives focused on women and children.
