Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched his country’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system in Mauritius and Sri Lanka in the presence of Mauritius PM Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and President of Sri Lanka Ranil Wickremesinghe.
The leaders were joined by Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das at the virtual launch. The expansion follows the successful implementation of UPI in France earlier this year.
In Colombo UPI transactions were facilitated by NPCI International Payments Limited and LankaPay - the country’s national payment network, while in Mauritius, the Bank of Mauritius initiated the launch of RuPay cards and UPI payment system.
