ADA to honor Kaushik Ramaiya for contribution to healthcare
Ramaiya will be felicitated in an awards ceremony at the ADA's 84th Scientific Sessions in June 2024 at the Orange County Convention Center.

The American Diabetes Association (ADA) has selected Indian origin professor Kaushik Ramaiya as a recipient of the National Scientific and Health Care Achievement Award 2024.
He is recognized under the title ‘distinguished international service in the cause of diabetes’ for the year 2024. The award honors individuals who have demonstrated outstanding research, evaluation, and care in diabetes performed from an international perspective with an international impact.
All recipients will be felicitated in an awards ceremony at the ADA's 84th Scientific Sessions scheduled to happen in June 2024 at the Orange County Convention Center. The awards honor academics, healthcare providers, and educators who have contributed to advances in diabetes care and research.
Ramaiya has overseen and fostered dramatic improvement in the prognosis of young people with type 1 diabetes in Tanzania and throughout sub-Saharan Africa and management of type 2 diabetes across the region.
He is a consultant physician in internal medicine (endocrinology) and chief executive officer at Shree Hindu Mandal Hospital, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He is also an honorary lecturer at the Department of Internal Medicine at Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences, Dar es Salaam.
In 2018, he became an honorary professor of medicine and global health at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, UK. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles. Currently, he is a board member of the World Diabetes Foundation and general secretary of the Tanzania Diabetes Association (TDA) and Tanzania NCD Alliance (TANCDA).
Ramaiya received his medical training at the University of Bombay, India, and completed his postgraduate training in internal medicine at the University of Dar es Salaam. He accomplished his post-graduation at the University of Newcastle, UK.
Announcing the awards, the American Diabetes Association's CEO Charles Chuck Henderson, said, "The diligent work of these passionate professionals is moving us closer to a world free of diabetes. Their contributions to research, prevention, and treatment are creating lasting change and improving the lives of people affected by diabetes."
Another Indian will also receive the ADA award. Dr Viswanathan Mohan has been named a recipient of the 2024 Kelly West Award for outstanding achievement in epidemiology, which recognizes contributions to the field of diabetes epidemiology.
