AAO-HNS/F names Rahul Shah executive vice president and CEO

Shah’s extensive experience and innovative approach will be instrumental in advancing the Academy's strategic goals and enhancing patient care.

Indian-American physician Rahul K. Shah, has been appointed as the executive vice president (EVP) and CEO of the American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery and its Foundation (AAO-HNS/F). 

Shah will officially assume his leadership role in December 2024, succeeding James C. Denneny III, who will retire after a decade of distinguished service, the academy said in a news release.

Reacting to his appointment, Shah said, “It is a tremendous honor to be chosen by the boards of directors to represent our specialty and advocate for our members to better serve our patients. I am excited to partner with and add value to our members navigating an increasingly complex healthcare environment.” 

Douglas D. Backous, president of AAO-HNS/F, announced the appointment, highlighting Shah’s dynamic leadership and commitment to the specialty. “This appointment marks a significant milestone for our organization. We are confident that Shah brings the dynamic leadership and cohesive collaboration needed to continue to guide us into the future,” Backous stated. 

Shah currently holds the position of senior vice president for the Children’s National Hospital-Based Specialties Center, overseeing 17 divisions and institutes. Since his appointment in 2021, he has spearheaded several strategic initiatives and brought significant innovation to the role. 

Previously, he served as vice president and chief quality and safety officer for Children’s National Health System. His tenure at Children’s National Medical Center includes roles such as president of the medical staff, associate surgeon-in-chief, and medical director of perioperative services. 

Shah’s academic credentials include a combined BA/MD from Boston University School of Medicine, an otolaryngology residency at Tufts University, a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Children’s Hospital Boston, Harvard University, and an MBA from the George Washington University Healthcare program.
