Official statistics from the Indian government show that nearly 22,000 individuals from the Gujarat region chose to renounce their citizenship from 2014 to 2022.
The information was made public when Sushil Kumar Modi, a member of parliament, asked for data regarding the amount of Indians who willingly turned in their passports during the previous ten years in the Rajya Sabha.
In response to Modi's inquiry, the Indian External Affairs Ministry shared statistics showing that 22,300 people in Gujarat had renounced their Indian citizenship by returning their passports within the past decade.
According to the statistics, 60,414 people surrendered their passports in Delhi, making it the city with the highest number of surrenders in India during that time. With 28,117 passport surrenders, Punjab was second, and Gujarat was third.
Conversely, regions with the lowest number of passport surrenders included Andaman & Nicobar, with only 16 individuals giving up their passports in the previous decade. It was also reported that Lakshadweep and Daman Diu had 33 passport surrenders, and Sikkim had 34 individuals surrendering their passports.
Over the past eleven years, the total number of individuals renunciating Indian citizenship has more than doubled. It is mandatory for individuals to surrender their Indian passport upon obtaining the nationality of another country if they have previously held an Indian passport.
