‘2018-Everyone is a Hero,’ a Malayalam survival drama, has been chosen as India's official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 96th Academy Awards, making it only the fourth film from the language to get the honour.

Before this, the nation's official entry for the Oscars in the Malayalam language was Jallikattu (2019), which was directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery and starred Mohanlal. Guru (1997), Adaminte Makan Abu (2011), and Adaminte Makan Abu (2011), were the other films which failed to receive any nominations.

Directed by Jude Anthany Joseph, 2018 is based on the record-breaking rainfall and flooding that struck Kerala in 2018. With an all-star cast that included Tovino Thomas, Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aparna Balamurali, Kalaiyarasan, Kunchacko Boban, Lal, Narain, Tanvi Ram, and others, the movie served as a poignant reminder of the times when people in Kerala came together to assist those in need regardless of their religion, caste, or political inclinations.

At a period when the cinemas in the State were in trouble as a result of the majority of movies bombing at the box office, it also became one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of all time.

“Yesterday I received international recognition for my performance in the movie 2018. Today, the movie itself is representing India at the Academy Awards. Yes, 2018 is India’s official entry for the Oscars. Thrilled, Elevated, Excited… That’s what I’m doing right now. Hoping to hear “And the Oscar goes to”… Fingers Crossed…,” Thomas said on his Instagram.

The actor, played the role of the lead in the film. His character, Anoop, is a former military officer who withdrew from service due to the trauma of witnessing soldiers' deaths in combat. However,  when the devatating floods hit Anoop rises to the occasion and gets actively involved in rescue operations saving multiple lives.
